Washington DC area Labor Day weekend events

Labor Day weekend in the Washington, DC area is around the corner, and many homeowners and renters are leaving town. Many others of us will stay closer to home and will be looking for fun things to do. My daughter will be performing with her high school marching band in both the Kensington and the Gaithersburg Labor Day parades. I’m not sure what else I’ll be during this long weekend, but I know there will be plenty of fun activities and events to choose from! I’ve compiled a list of some of the local Labor Day events:

• NSO Labor Day Capitol Concert 2011 Free concert by the National Symphony Orchestra on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capital building.
• DC Blues Festival 23rd annual music festival at the Carter Barron Amphitheatre.
• Grand Slam Labor Day Weekend with the Nats Nationals Park, only $5.00 tickets!
• Maryland Renaissance Festival Crownsville, MD
• 41st Annual Labor Day Art Show Glen Echo Spanish Ballroom. Free, showcasing over 150 artists in painting, photography, pottery, jewelry and more.
• Abbey Road on the River Beatles Festival Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center. Five-day festival honoring the music of the Beatles.
• Maloof Money Cup Skateboarding Event RFK Memorial Stadium. Top professional skateboarders from around the world compete.
• Herndon Labor Day Festival Herndon Town Green. $5.00 admission to see local and national jazz performers; additional $10.00 to sample wines from the region’s best wineries.
• Greenbelt Labor Day Festival Greenbelt Community Center. The area’s biggest Labor Day parade and festival.
• 73rd Annual Gaithersburg Labor Day Parade Summit and Diamond Avenues.
• Town of Kensington Labor Day Parade and Festival St. Paul’s Street and Plyers Mill Road.  
• Virginia Scottish Games and Festival Great Meadow.
• 10th Annual Page to Stage Festival The Kennedy Center. Free preview of upcoming Kennedy Center and local theater shows this season.
