Recycling Event in Kensington for Unused School Supplies!

SCRAP began in Portland, Oregon, in 1998. It was an organization founded by teachers who began storing and re-using their leftover classroom materials at the end of each school year rather than throwing them away. It quickly grew as the word spread; more and more teachers from around the area began bringing their classroom and art supplies.
Others came and took the materials and used them to make projects of their own. Eventually, the members began actively soliciting from local businesses, and their stock grew. They received a 501(c)(3) nonprofit designation in 1999, as well as a $38,000 grant from the Department of Environmental Quality. They were up and running.

In Washington, DC, we now have our own chapter, "a creative reuse resource described as a Community Forklift for artists." They're hosting an event this Saturday, June 18th, at the Amicus Green Building Center, 4080A Howard Avenue, in Kensington, from 10-2. Open to the public, this will be a make-it take-it project suitable for kids and/or adults. It's also a collection drive. You can bring in scrappy materials and clean, empty packaging. All donations will receive a tax receipt.

Read more about this organization on their website, and come on out with your end-of-year leftovers to share! You may even find something you can use yourself!
